2019 vs 2023 Indonesian Surf Trips for a Weekend Warrior.

Preparation

Preparation for the 2019 trip started from 2 months out and involved a weekly surf, cardio once a week and 2 swims a week.

For the 2023 trip, preparation started from 2 months out. It involved an average of 1 surf per week, a cardio session once a week and 3 x SPT / Strength sessions a week. Each week, paddling volume was upped by adding another SPT paddling session in the form of 10 min Sprint sessions and/ or 30min endurance sessions in front of surf movies. In the last couple of weeks at least 3 of the days had 2 x SPT paddling sessions each day.

Outcome

For the 2019 trip, energy and paddle strength started noticeably decreasing mid-way through the trip. A few sessions were missed. Recovery after the trip was at least a month to get back to normal energy levels.

In 2023, energy and paddle strength stayed the same and even increased throughout the trip.

Effective results

A big part of surf paddle fitness is consistency. Because paddle muscles are not really used during day to day life, if you are not surfing a few times a week, your paddling fitness decreases. The Surf Paddle Trainer is designed to target these muscles.

We discovered that as little as 10 minutes every second day between surfs is enough to maintain a reasonable paddle fitness.
